Massive Attack And Gogol Bordello

So, tonight it was Massive Attack for me and a couple of friends, over at Karaiskaki stadium. Was a bit excited to see them, couldn't figure out what to expect of them, they're a weird band, you know, quite unlike any of the other Bristol bands, much more expansive in their repertoir.

Their set a was a bit, I don't know how to call it. They played everything the crowd wanted to listen, they played everything note by note (not a big fan of perfect, polished perfomances myself, but I don't really mind them either), everything was perfect, in theory. There was just something missing from the whole picture. My take is that they were a bit dissapointed by what they called "a half-empty stadium" and, yeah, I guess it was half empty, the attendance was really low for a band like Massive Attack. I thought the seats would overflow but in fact pretty much all the seats were empty so it was just the crowd around the stage.

Angel, performed a few days ago

Anyway, what Massive Attack's performance lacked was offered generously by Gogol Bordello. These people are crazy, you just have to see them. A very upbeat live performace, they had people dancing around from the first four bars. Hey, even I spinned around my axis for, like, a couple of seconds, so, there. With their accordeon and their violin and the funky bass and that crazy, crazy dude singing in Borat's version of English, you just can't go wrong, you know? Never seen eeeeveryone from the crowd participating so much before, so it was good. Awesome, awesome band, wouldn't mind seeing them again next time they drop by.

Ultimate, performed at this year's Coachella

I also got to see The National play right before Massive Attack, sounded a bit like Madrugada to this friend of mine, was a bit dissapointed myself, but it's ok, you win some, you lose some.

Overall, not the greatest concert I've attended, but still, had a good time on a nice evening at a decent place.

Oh, and, Michael's photos of course.
